From St. Joe’s to Master Sommelier: Michael Markarian '91 Makes History

In an exciting achievement, Michael Markarian '91 has earned a spot in the spotlight of the wine world. In 2024, he became one of only four individuals in North America to pass the Theory portion of the prestigious Master Sommelier Exam, a monumental milestone in the world of fine wine and hospitality.

But Michael’s journey doesn’t stop there. He is now preparing for the next stages of the grueling exam—studying for the Service and Tasting portions as he sets his sights on earning the coveted Master Sommelier Diploma. This title is held by fewer than 300 professionals worldwide, making Michael’s pursuit all the more remarkable.

Currently, Michael serves as the Sommelier and Beverage Director at Elizabeth’s, an acclaimed fine dining restaurant in Washington, D.C., known for its innovative seasonal vegan tasting menu.

Cheers to you, Michael!
