St. Joe’s Alumni Make Waves at the Head of the Charles Regatta
Congratulations to Paul McCarthy '67, Paul Rodgers '71, Jeff Meyers '85, Tom Cannavo '86, and Michael Cannavo (Coxswain) '22 on finishing 17th in the Head Of The Charles Regatta (HOCR)!
For one weekend each October, rowing teams from around the world descend to the banks of the Charles River in Massachusetts to compete in what has become, in the sport, the most important racing competition of the year. Rowers must apply and be accepted to this long-standing race, and these St. Joe’s alum won a bid for the Men’s Grand Master 4+ event.
If winning a bid to the largest rowing competition in the world wasn’t enough, the shell the team raced in was named after Paul Rodgers '71 for the integral part he’s played on the team for so many years. Plus, there is a father and son duo, Tom and Michael Cannavo, that raced one seat apart! Congratulations again to the team! St. Joe’s has much to be proud of in these men representing our school, both on land and water.
Coming Full Circle on Broadway
This summer, Michael Slon '88 – a professional conductor and music professor at the University of Virginia – reconnected with his former St. Joe's Choral Music Director, Jim Deiotte, for a memorable trip to Broadway. The two met in New York City, where Michael treated his mentor to a performance of "Merrily We Roll Along" — the recent Sondheim revival starring Daniel Radcliffe. The musical held a special significance; Mr. Deiotte had first introduced Michael and his classmates to the Sondheim work during their senior year at St. Joe’s in 1987–88. For Michael, it was the perfect way to honor his former director’s influence while enjoying an evening out as colleagues and friends.
