Department Overview
The novelist and essayist James Baldwin wrote that history “does not refer merely, or even principally, to the past. On the contrary, the great force of history comes from the fact that we carry it within us, that history is literally present in all that we do.”
As Baldwin understood, the force of history is alive in our own world. The primary aim of this department, then, is to provide our students with the analytical skills and knowledge necessary to deal critically with the problems and triumphs of the world today, and to help students become the informed citizens on whom the world will rely in its future. Our students will have the skills to effectively interpret the world in which they live and to communicate their knowledge using 21st century methods.
