Department Overview

The science department at St. Joe’s is dedicated to cultivating in students a genuine love for science and a passion for learning that often inspire them to pursue STEM-related careers. A variety of challenging courses in both science and engineering are offered, and include extensive laboratory experiences.

In addition to coursework, both the Robotics and Science Olympiad teams offer extracurricular opportunities for students to explore various aspects of the sciences. The internships offered through our Career Exploration Program also offer students valuable real-world experience.

Course Progression
Most students take Biological Systems in freshmen year, Chemistry in sophomore year, Physics in junior year, and a science elective in senior year. Some students also take Geology and Climate Science as a part of their course progression. Students who have scored mastery on the Living Environment exam in 8th grade often begin with Chemistry, leaving the way open for more elective and/or advanced placement courses.
