HISTORY OF ST. JOE'S WRESTLING

WrestlingThe wrestling program began at St. Joe’s in 1983. Wrestling is considered a team sport in high school and college, however wrestling places an emphasis on individual performance that is unlike any other high school sport. The wrestling season begins in November and concludes with the state tournament in March. St. Joe’s has had success both as a team and with many individual wrestlers achieving local and statewide championships.

St. Joe’s competes in the Monsignor Martin High School Athletic Association along with St. Francis, Canisius, St. Mary’s of Lancaster, Niagara Catholic, Nichols School and the Gow School. St. Joe’s competes against these schools in meets during the regular season to decide a league champion. The Marauders routinely test themselves in dual meets against the top competition in the area. St. Joe's also competes in some of the toughest individual tournaments in New York State, including the Teike-Bernabi Tournament in Spencerport and the Niagara Frontier Wrestling Officials Tournament.

Wrestlers from St. Joe’s compete in the Monsignor Martin All-Catholic tournament each February. The champions in each of the 15 weight classes earn All-Catholic status. The top four place finishers in each weight class advance to the Catholic High Schools Athletic Association (CHSAA) State Tournament to compete against other qualifiers from Long Island and New York City. St. Joe’s has finished in the top 10 at the CHSAA tournament in each of the past nine seasons with fifth place finishes in 2009, 2005, 2003 & 2002. The champions in each weight class from the CHSAA state tournament move on the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Wrestling Championships.

St. Joe’s wrestling has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success over the Wrestling2past decade. The 1998 squad won the MMHSAA title for the first time while the 2003 and 2005 squads were both ranked in the Top Ten Dual Meet Rankings for all of Western New York. The 2005 squad broke the school record for dual meet wins in a season with 11.

The 2009 squad won the MMHSAA for the first time in nine years. Wrestling Review of Western New York had the team ranked #10 in WNY while the New York State Sportswriters Association listed the team as honorable mention for all of New York State.

In all St. Joe’s has crowned 71 MMAA All-Catholic Champions since 1983. Fourty-nine of which have come since 1998. The Marauders have had 8 young men combine to win 12 CHSAA State Titles. Five St. Joe’s wrestlers have reached the pinnacle of the sport in New York State and placed in the top 6 at the NYSPHSAA State Tournament. The most recent being Mike Rozborski ’05 who finished his career with a school record 116 wins.

The wrestling program continues to grow at St. Joe’s with more than 40 boys coming out for the sport each winter. There are no cuts from the program.

In order to introduce new athletes to wrestling, a youth wrestling club is offered each winter for boys in grades 1 - 8 along with an introductory camp each July for boys in grades 6 - 8.
