Visual Arts ( Catherine Ward )

The visual arts program offers courses ranging from Art Appreciation to a four-year sequence targeted towards students interested in studying art at college. Traditional media and techniques including pencil, charcoal, and acrylic are explored, as well as new media that can be accessed in our newly equipped graphics-imaging lab. Beyond classroom and studio work, students are able to exhibit art throughout the year at school, culminating with our juried spring art show, and for two different month-long Artexhibitions during the year at the Ken-Ton Municipal Building. Advanced students also participate in the Annual Daemen College Western New York All-High Art Exhibit, The University of Buffalo High School Art Exhibit, the Young Curator's Program & Exhibit at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, as well as in various contests as they arise. For example, our students have won awards over the past few years in the Annual Buffalo News Cartoon Contest, the Project Truth Poster Contest, the Annual Chalk Walk at the Lewiston Art Festival and the Taste of Buffalo poster contest.

Each student within the visual arts program creates a portfolio of work for his exam in the class and several seniors have used these portfolios to gain admission and/or scholarships to secondary art schools (such as RIT, FIT, UB and Pratt) and/or to achieve college credit through the AP Board. For students who are unable to fit art into their class schedule, or who want further artistic opportunities, we offer an Art Club that meets once a week for various workshops, field trips and projects.
