ST. JOE'S STUDENTS TAKE 2ND PLACE OVERALL AND THE PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD AT LEWISTON ART FESTIVAL
Congratulations to juniors Gregory Paladino, Jacob Roberts & Michael Johnson who took second place in the Lewiston Art Festival Chalk Walk competition on Saturday, August 9th. The team also won the People's Choice Award.
The Chalk Walk is held annually in conjunction with the Lewiston Art Festival. Student teams (three from each school) are given four hours to draw a mural interpreting a given theme on a 8 x 10 ft. section of the street. This year's theme was "200 Years of Cultural Diversity in Niagara County" - celebrating the Bicentennial of Niagara County.
There were a few tense moments when it began to sprinkle and at about 3:45 p.m. the sky completely blackened, the wind started whipping and the temperature dropped 10 degrees! The judges hurried along, asking schools if they would mind being judged a little early... all agreed, scores were tallied, awards given out in a hurry and everything cleaned up.... then the rain blew away. The St. Joe's team first received the green trophy for the "People's Choice" Award, determined by people paying a quarter to vote for their favorite design and team. Then when all the judges scores were tallied, the St. Joe's team received the red trophy for Second Place. A total of 10 schools competed in the event.
The St. Joe's design was a large "200" superimposed on a picture of Niagara Falls. Inside the numbers were several images of various icons representing Niagara County, including peaches and farmland, grapes and vineyards, a Wurlitzer organ, the Maid of the Mist, Old Fort Niagara, the underground railroad and the Bell Aerospace museum.
Congratulations to Gregory, Jacob and Michael!
