ST. JOE'S RECEIVES TARGET GRANT FOR ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAMSt. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute today announced a partnership with Target in recognition of its efforts as an educational leader within the visual and performing arts. The Target grant of $1,000 will specifically be utilized for the school’s Artist in Residence program whereby professional artists are invited into the school to share their craft with the students. The approach is a hands-on teaching method that has the artists working directly with the students. The purpose of the Artist in Residence program is to provide educational opportunities in the arts, which go beyond what regular department staff can offer, exposing students to a high quality level of creative work with professional artists.
President/Principal of St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute, Robert T. Scott, AFSC comments, “The positive effect that the Artist in Residence program has on students is one of nurturing their creative talents and curiosity for the arts, while also developing their talent within a specified area. This grant from Target will specifically allow for the continued growth of a sculpture workshop series that is led by Larry Griffis III, as well as a series of workshops offered for pianists led by Joseph Brancato and film animation led by Carl “Skip” Battaglia ’66, as well as graphic design workshops led by Vincent Benbenek ’82 of SansSerif Design, Brian Grunert ’88 of White Bicycle Design, and Guillermo Izquierdo ’88 of Bright I Design. ”
This grant is part of ongoing efforts by Target to strengthen families and communities throughout the country. Since opening its doors, Target has given 5 percent of its income to organizations that support education, the arts, social services and volunteerism. Today that translates to more than $3 million every week.
“At Target, our local grants are making a difference in the communities we serve,” said Laysha Ward, vice president, community relations, Target. “We’re proud to partner with St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute as part of our ongoing commitment to give back to the communities where our guests and team members live and work.”
