St. Joe’s Wrestlers Capture Second Straight MMHSAA Championship

On Wednesday, February 3, the St. Joe’s wrestling team visited St. Francis for dual meet that would decide the MMHSAA championship. The Marauders started off with a bang, opening up a 33-0 lead, and never looked back as they triumphed 51-9 to gain their second straight MMHSAA title.

The dual meet started at 112 pounds as freshman Angel Leon took on Alex Adelman. Leon scored an early takedown along with a set of back points before the end of the first period. Adelman started in the down position for the second period and Leon took full advantage with a pin at 2:58. At 119 pounds, sophomore Brian Pilski earned a  7-4 decision over Austin LaCrego. Pilski surrendered the first takedown, but quickly earned a reversal. Pilski added an escape and two takedowns to finish on top at the end of each period.

Freshman Travis Berube secured a pin in 48 seconds over Mark Adelman at 125 pounds. Berube gave Adelman no room to breathe as he scored a takedown off the whistle and locked up a cradle to earn the pin over the senior. At 130 pounds, Charlie Cryan put on a takedown clinic with Jeremy Boltz as collected five takedowns and a reversal for a 12 to 6 decision.

Sophomore Corey Allen used an early takedown to set up a pin at 1:18 over Mitch Staebell at 135 pounds. Fellow sophomore Liam Kearney scored a takedown at the end of the first period along with an escape early in the second period and rode out Derek Freitas for the duration of the match at 140 pounds.

Senior Chris Crocker allowed the first takedown against Jarett Dolegala, but did all of the scoring during the rest of the match as he collected a pin at 3:24. At 152 pounds, freshman Noah Jones took on defending All-Catholic wrestler Brian Rodgers of St. Francis. Rodgers scored the first takedown and secured the pin 56 seconds into the first period.

Brian Harper moved up to 160 pounds to take on senior Dan Couglin. Harper scored three takedowns and only surrendered escapes as he earned a dominant 9-4 decision. At 171 pounds, senior Mike Duguay took on senior Anthony DeMarco. DeMarco pulled out the 13-8 decision in a back-and-forth match that saw both wrestlers scoring offensive points.

Senior Tyler Beresford collected a reversal and a penalty point as he earned a 3-0 decision over Mark Batholomew at 189 pounds. Junior James McClary picked up a forfeit win at 215 pounds. Freshman Jose Grullon closed out the evening with dominating win over Eli Jerge at 103 pounds. Grullon hit a nice double leg takedown in the first period before earning the pin at 3:18.
