The philosophy of the St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute Foreign Language Department is to teach in a Christ-centered classroom the four basic skills of listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing in a foreign language and also an appreciation for the foreign cultures studied. By the end of four years of study, the student should:
- Understand an educated native speaking at a normal speed
- Speak with acceptable pronunciation, intonation, grammatical accuracy and fluency
- Be able to read newspapers, magazines, and contemporary writing with comprehension
- Be able to write correctly anything he can say
- Have acquired a sensitivity to the value system and behavior patterns of the people whose language he is studying
2014 French 1 2114 German 1 2214 Spanish 1 | Credit: 1 credit | | Prerequisite: Department Approval | | | Level one courses are designed to acquaint the student with a modern foreign language and to develop the skills of listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and basic paragraph writing. Students study grammar, fundamental vocabulary, and culture in a communicative environment. | | Enrollment in Level 1 courses is limited. Incoming freshmen are required to select an alternate Level 1 course. |

In addition, there is continued emphasis on communicative proficiency. |

2035 French 3 Honors 2135 German 3 Honors 2235 Spanish 3 Honors | Credit: 1 credit | | Prerequisite: Enrollment is by invitation of the Modern Language Department with final placement based on June grades and department approval. | | These courses include more difficult reading, advanced listening comprehension requirements, greater fluency, and free composition. Supplementary materials are used throughout the year. Students take the NYS Comprehensive Regents Examination. |

2045 French 4 Honors 2145 German 4 Honors 2245 Spanish 4 Honors | Credit: 1 credit | | Prerequisite: Enrollment is by invitation of the Modern Language Department with final placement based on June grades and department approval. | | These courses follow the level 4 program and are designed for students who intend to proceed to the Advanced Placement level or advanced college level courses. The AP examination will be offered to those seniors who demonstrate the ability and interest. |
