Computer Forensics Expert Peter Szczepankiewicz to Present at St. Joe’s
Alumnus’ Lecture Part of  Effort to Develop Alumni Science Network

Cyber security, already a prominent worldwide topic, has been exacerbated recently by the rift between corporate giant Google and China.

Peter Szczepankiewicz, a computer forensics expert with the International Business Machines Corporation (IBM), will address students, parents and alumni of St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute on various matters related to internet security at 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 11 in the school’s Cullen Lecture Hall. Members of the public are also welcome to attend.

A 1990 alumnus of St. Joe’s, Szczepankiewicz will instruct attendees on the latest techniques that they can use to keep their computers safe from password attacks, Webspy, Metasploit and other pervasive web applications that hackers are currently using to subvert personal information.

Szczepankiewicz is presently a senior security engineer with IBM and an instructor affiliated with the SANS Institute, an internet security training organization comprised of industry leaders from across the globe. He is a former lieutenant commander in the United States Navy, where he conducted simulated internet penetration attacks.

The presentation by Szczepankiewicz is part of a larger effort to maximize usage of the recently-opened Cullen Center for Excellence in Science on the school’s campus and fulfill an existing need to provide its students with scientific education outside of the classroom.

The St. Joe’s “Science Network,” initiated by faculty and alumni employed in assorted fields of scientific endeavor, is also looking to enhance the school’s portfolio of internship programs (i.e. observational, interactive, and research-based) to further stimulate the development of future scientists from St. Joe’s. This “network” would also allow alumni to share ideas, opportunities, and resources in their diverse areas of expertise. At this particular seminar, the Science Network Committee will make summer science internship applications available to any interested students from St. Joe’s.
