HISTORY OF ST. JOE'S BASKETBALL
Since St. Joe's participated in the first basketball playoff championship game that awarded the Manhattan Cup in 1948, the Marauders have remained a fixture at or near the top of the Monsignor Martin League. Although the 1948 team was not able to win the inaugural Manhattan Cup the future basketball teams at St. Joe's have more than avenged that defeat, having won the Manhattan Cup a Monsignor Martin record 19 times, including the following year in 1949.
A testament to the program's consistent strength is exhibited by the fact that St. Joe's has won at least two Manhattan Cups in every decade since the 1950's. The Marauders were able to capture the Manhattan Cup in 1951, 1955, and 1959 and also participated in two other championship games during that decade. St. Joe's claimed another Manhattan Cup in 1961and then again in 1967 behind the play of the school's second all-time leading scorer Dale Tepas '67 (1,233 career points), who would go on to play at St. Bonaventure University.
The Marauders won back-to-back titles for the first time in their history in 1973 and 1974 and would add another Manhattan Cup championship game appearance in 1978. The 1980's began very well for St. Joe's basketball as they won Manhattan Cup championship games in 1980, 1982, and 1983. The 1980 team participated in a New York State Catholic playoff game, and the 1982 and 1983 teams added the school's second set of back-to-back titles.
Under the leadership of head coaches Ed Kobierecki and Tim Lennon, St. Joe's re-emerged as a basketball power not only in the Monsignor Martin League, but in all of
Western New York in the early 1990's. The Marauders won five Manhattan Cups in six years beginning in 1990, including four straight from 1990 to 1993 and the fifth of the decade in 1995. During this time St. Joe's advanced into the New York State Catholic Class B playoffs every year from 1990 to 1996. They won State Catholic Championships in 1991, 1992, and 1993. Both the 1992 and 1993 teams lost in the New York State Class B title game in Glens Falls, New York.
Much of this success was jump started by the play of the school's and the Monsignor Martin League's all-time leading scorer Eric Eberz '92, who later became a starter at Villanova University. Eberz scored 1,927 points in his four year varsity career at St. Joe’s from 1989 to 1992.
Current head coach Mark Simon has re-established St. Joe's as one of the perennial powers among the high school basketball teams in Western New York. For the first time in the school's history, the Marauders have appeared in five straight Manhattan Cup Championship games dating back to 2002. St. Joe's has won four Manhattan Cups during that span, with championships coming in 2002, 2004,2006 and 2008. The 2004 and 2006 teams captured New York State Catholic Class A Championships and both participated in the New York State Class A Final Four in Glens Falls, with the 2004 team losing in double-overtime in the state title game. The 2006 and most recent addition of the Marauders became only the second team in school history to be ranked #1 in Western New York by the Buffalo News at the end of the season, and also established the school record for wins in a season with 27.
The basketball program at St. Joe's has a tradition of success that exists among the varsity, junior varsity, and freshmen teams. The school's players, administrators, students, supporters, and coaches continue to work hard to carry on this tradition.
